Calabash Shell Craft

• In China, the calabash is an ancient remedy for health. In the old days the doctors would carry medicine inside as it has fabled properties for healing. The calabash is believed to absorb negative earth-based chi (energy) that would otherwise affect health and is a traditional Chinese medicine cure.


• The calabash here features the two most powerful symbols of power in China, the Chinese Dragon and Phoenix. These two majestic creatures have always been paired up in arts and crafts for centuries. One of the main reasons is that they complete the union of yin and yang, an ancient Chinese philosophy that describes two primal opposing but complementary forces found in all things in the universe. Dragon is yang, representing light, masculine, upward-seeking and corresponds to the day. Whereas Phoenix is yin, symbolising dark, feminine, downward-seeking and corresponds to the night.
